Chris Lucas

With over two decades of mentoring and coaching experience in fields such as Outdoor Leadership, Personal Development, and Business, and now 4+ years of Run Coaching experience and implementation from a Sports Science perspective, I bring to the table a diverse set of skills and experience that I get to help runners with. This brings me a lot of joy and fulfillment. There’s nothing I love more than seeing someone grow in their running and as a human, and to just be a small part of that is truly epic!

Running has been a huge part of my life since being a kid in the 80s running around barefoot! Athletics and Cross Country growing up, then as a teenager running on the Milk Trucks with my Dad for many years and into adulthood in the family business—this is where I built some ultra legs without knowing it! Overcoming personal challenges, including drug and alcohol addiction, has shaped my approach to coaching. Clean and sober since September 2007, I bring a wealth of experience in mental resilience and spiritual principles to help runners break through barriers.

I started my journey of Run Coaching in 2016-2018, when I began helping a couple of people in my immediate circle for fun. I was at that time going through a lot of changes in my personal life which included my Mum's passing after many years of sickness, my own burnout story, and a marriage that had come to the end of its journey. I had ideas at that time of ‘wouldn’t it be cool to do more of this coaching thing!’ I felt there was some calling starting to brew inside me, but it was still very far away. My values and priorities in life were changing, and by late 2018 I had the house-bus, and it was later in 2019 that Char and I met! Char and I have been on an epic journey together since, not only with CMF Running unfolding, but also together as a couple living purposefully, and also in our own continued personal development—we love getting up every day and doing CMF!

Being a full-time run coach and having my livelihood depend on the success of my athletes and CMF Running, I’m very dedicated to continually learning and developing my coaching skills. Not throwing cookie-cutter plans out there or trying to get individuals to fit into a ‘system,’ I’m able to objectively look at every unique person with the goal of ‘how best can I serve this individual.’ Everyone is so different, with different strengths and weaknesses, different limitations, ingrained beliefs—there is so much potential hiding in all of us, including myself. I feel at times it's my athletes that show me things that continually serve as breakthrough moments for myself! It’s a journey that we get to take together 😊

I don’t have a set coaching philosophy per se, as that would be putting myself into a box, although I do love using Sports Science as a tool to help with prescription and analysis of training, and combining aspects of health, intuition, and personal development in order to help my athletes. Data isn’t everything—but it is something…. And holistic measures aren’t everything—but they are something!

I love bringing people together for CMF group runs and events, fostering a sense of belonging, community, and shared achievement. I've coached runners of all abilities, from walk/jog beginners to 2:40:00 marathoners and podium finishers at Ultra Marathons. The one common denominator that leads to running success is trusting the process, maintaining open dialogue, and the athlete being open to trying new things.
